Why Landscape Architecture?
About Me
Hi, I’m Megan Janssen! Since I was a young girl, design has always been my passion. From crafting cardboard furniture for my dolls to building massive LEGO cities with my siblings, I have always known that I wanted to pursue a future in design. That passion grew stronger in high school, where my first architecture class inspired me to look deeper into the ways design shapes people’s everyday experiences. By the summer before my senior year, I discovered landscape architecture—the field where my love of creativity, storytelling, and the environment could truly intersect.
Storytelling has always been at the heart of how I see design. During a previous internship with The Walt Disney Company, I experienced how Disney Imagineers use narrative to transport guests into worlds where design, nature, and human experience seamlessly blend. That approach deeply influenced the way I now view landscape architecture—not just as a profession that shapes physical spaces, but as a medium for creating stories, memories, and moments of connection.
Traveling has also played a huge role in shaping my design perspective. Each year, my family visits a national park. But over time, these trips became more challenging as my triplet brother, Ryan, who has cerebral palsy, grew older and now primarily uses a wheelchair. My father used to carry him across rough terrain, but as Ryan became an adult, those options disappeared. While my family has had to adapt and accept that some hikes—like down the Grand Canyon or through the Colorado mountains—are not accessible for him, I’ve realized that no one should be excluded from the awe of looking up at a sequoia or standing at the edge of the Black Canyon.
This realization fueled my passion to design with accessibility at the forefront. I see landscape architecture as an opportunity to tell stories through outdoor spaces that are both inclusive and memorable. My goal is to create landscapes that balance preservation with accessibility—spaces that not only protect nature but also invite everyone to fully experience it. Whether in national parks, college campuses, or local communities, I want to craft environments that create lasting experiences where every individual feels like they are part of the story.
